Not all light is created equal. Understanding the difference between ambient and task lighting is the first step to creating a home that's both beautifully lit and practically functional.
Ambient lighting is the general, overall illumination of a room. It's the light that allows you to move around safely and see the space as a whole. Think ceiling fixtures, recessed downlights, chandeliers, and large pendant lights. Ambient light should be soft and even — not too bright, not too dim.
Task lighting is focused, directed light for specific activities. Reading, cooking, applying makeup, and working at a desk all require task lighting. Without it, you strain your eyes trying to see detail in insufficient light. Desk lamps, under-cabinet kitchen lights, bathroom vanity lights, and adjustable floor lamps are all task lighting.
A room with well-balanced ambient and task lighting feels comfortable at any time of day, for any activity. It's one of the most impactful — and most overlooked — elements of great interior design.
